I could not leave out the classic sagebrush when working on a series of plants from the American West. The main image in this piece started with some monoprints I created on a gelli plate. Then I added drips, lines, leaves and squiggles with acrylic inks, paint and pens.
"Sagebrush" is a vivid, colorful painting featuring a stylized sagebrush. The plant, with a gnarled and scaly gray trunk, spreads its branches upwards and outwards, covered with tiny, pale green leaves. Perched on one of the branches to the right side of the tree is a sparrow, rendered in gentle tones that evoke a serene presence.
The background of the painting is divided into two primary sections. The left two-thirds feature an intense blue backdrop with subtle horizontal streaks, suggesting the traces of a weathered surface. Located in the bottom left corner against this blue background is a circular pattern of lighter blue dots, imparting an additional layer of texture and visual interest.
The right third of the piece transitions into warmer tones with horizontal stripes of oranges and yellows, creating a distinct separation from the cooler blues and greens on the left. The use of these contrasting colors adds a dynamic quality to the piece and makes the white blossoms stand out even more. The whole composition has a crafted feel to it, with a balance between the natural subject and the abstracted, decorative elements in the background.
